Abstract
Arguably the most important figure in the history of Syriac Christianity, Ephrem the Syrian (ca. 306–73
CE
) was a deacon, theologian, exegete, poet, and hymnographer who wrote before the schismatic controversies that would entangle the church in the following century. Ephrem's writing is of great historical and theological importance, not least because it exhibits a Christianity almost entirely free of western influence.
