Vertebral Augmentation with Osteotome

View through CrossRef
Abstract Vertebral compression fractures are common injuries sustained in the vertebral bodies of the spine and contribute up to 1 billion dollars in direct medical care costs annually. Conventional management of these fractures includes multimodal pharmacologic therapy (NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, narcotics), bracing, and surgery. Vertebral augmentation has been an emerging procedural intervention for management of these injuries whereby cement is placed in a fractured vertebral body to provide stability, resulting in decreased pain. Currently, osteotomes are mainstay instruments for safe percutaneous access to the vertebral body. This chapter reviews the evidence, procedural nuances, and criteria for vertebral augmentation with use of the osteotome.
