Brazilian University Patents

In this work, a prospecting study of patents registered in Brazil (715) by ten young Brazilian universities is conducted. The results are compared with data from USP, a Brazilian university that is a reference in the scientific publication and protection of technologies by patents. USP registered 1181 patents in the study period (2000-2019). The results show that one of the young universities, UFCG, is nationally recognized for registering 98 patents in 2019. Although the universities hold a total of 715 registered patents, the number of granted patents is only 19. Licensed patents are also few, only 4, showing a significant difference between the reality of these universities and that of USP which, in the same period, had 400 patents granted and 54 licensed. Furthermore, the results show that universities' technological innovation centers have been crucially important in increasing patent registrations that are mainly focused on invention patents (93%). Finally, the patents were analyzed and their classifications (IPC) grouped into technological domains and subdomains, showing that each of the universities under study registered at least one patent in the area of fine chemistry or pharmacy.
