View through CrossRef
Background: Gyms exercises are becoming popular in terms of fitness and strength. Unsuitable methods, excessive use and overloading may overstretch the upper limb Nerves. Common symptoms: tingling, numbness, weakness, and pain. Nerve compression and stretching are major causes during resistance Training. Limited research on gym-going, non-athletic populations. This study assesses gym-related neuromuscular symptoms. No Indian data on upper limb neurological injuries in gym-goers. Previous studies focused on athletes, not regular gym-goers Early symptoms often ignored by participants &trainers. Absence of preventive guidelines in local gyms. Previous studies mainly focus on professional athletes. Lack of physiotherapist-led screening in gyms. Essential need for awareness & early detection strategies.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 218 gym going individuals from mirajcity. Participants aged 18 years to 50 years were recruited. Eligibility were assessed using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, and informed consent were obtained.
Screening and Assessments:
1.Neuropathic Pain Diagnostic Questionnaire: This tool will be used to identify and classify pain symptoms associated with nerve injuries, such as numbness, tingling, and weakness.
2.Self report Leeds assessment of neuropathic symptoms and signs (5 -LANSS) Distinguishes neuropathic pain from non-neuropathic pain; 5 LANSS is a LANSS without the two objective testing items.
3.Upper Limb Tension Tests (ULTTs):These clinical tests were performed to assess for neurological tension and potential nerve compression.
Results: The study included 128 gym-going individuals in Miraj City, aged between 18 and 50 years, with varying durations of training. Out of these participants, 14.8% demonstrated positive findings for upper limb neurological injuries using the combined assessment tools (5-LANSS, DN4 Questionnaire and Upper Limb Tension Tests).
Conclusion: The study found a 14.8% prevalence of upper limb neurological Injuries in gym-goers. Upper limb neurological injuries are prevalent among gym-goers. Wrist, elbow, and forearm most affected. Numbness, tingling, and neuropathic pain were frequent symptoms Early detection with ULTTs, and 5-LANSS is effective. Education and prevention strategies should be incorporated in gym Programs. Proper exercise techniques are essential for injury prevention.
