Lens kristallina anatomik yapısı itibariyle şeffaf görünüme sahip ve basit bir doku olmasına rağmen, oldukça karmaşık biyokimyasal işlevler üstlenmiş olması nedeniyle özellikli bir yapıdır. Tüm lens hastalıklarında karşılaşılan neredeyse değişmez ortak bulgu; lensin şeffaflığını yitirmiş olmasıdır. Köpeklerde karşılaşılan tüm oftalmik hastalıklar içinde en yaygın olanı kalıtsal lens bozukluklarıyla ilişkili olan katarakt, bu hayvan türünde görme kaybının önde gelen nedenlerinden biridir.
