Building the Dramatic Character

The dramatic character in general, and in television drama in particular, is considered one of the main elements upon which dramatic structure is built. It serves to convey the ideas and visions presented by the writer when composing the dramatic text. The director then assumes the responsibility of presenting it in a manner that aligns with the text’s propositions through directorial treatments that contribute to advancing the dramatic structure. The character is defined as one that suffers from a deficiency in one of its dimensions. It may be an anxious character searching for meaning in everything surrounding it, thinking and reflecting differently from others. It may also suffer from deficiencies in more than one dimension, where this lack becomes evident through its behavior and actions, which differ significantly from normal characters, giving it distinction and uniqueness within the dramatic structure. The researcher divided the study into four chapters. The first chapter, titled the methodological framework, included the research problem, which is represented in the following question: What are the foundations of character construction in television drama, and what are the artistic methods that contribute to its development? This chapter also included the importance of the research and its objectives, which aim to reveal the problematic aspects of the problematic character and the foundations and mechanisms of its dramatic construction. The second chapter included the theoretical framework, which was divided into approaches to character construction. It focused on studying the character and its dramatic construction in theatre, cinema, and television.
