On Valuing

Abstract We conceive of ourselves as valuing creatures, and this self-conception features prominently in a variety of philosophical literatures. Yet some argue that rival notions, such as caring, are more central to understanding human agency, well-being, and the sources of normativity for us. This chapter argues that both fans and detractors of valuing would benefit from an improved account of the attitude, one that takes valuing to include more than just evaluative belief and that interprets all relevant elements, including the belief that the valued object is good, in disositional terms. This fully dispositional account of valuing attempts to incorporate the whole self and remain sensitive to our imperfections.
