Modernist echoes in the artwork of painter Tatiana Cojocaru

This investigation aims to analyze the modernist sources that have contributed to the development of gestural spontaneity in the work of painter Tatiana Cojocaru, emphasizing stylistic influences, applied techniques, and conceptual directions specific to her art. The artist's abstract-expressive style stands out through a spontaneous approach to pictorial gesture, the use of broad brushstrokes, dynamic patches of colour, and a vibrant chromatic range designed to enhance the emotional dimension of her works. The research examines the impact of modernist currents on Tatiana Cojocaru's artistic vision, particularly abstractionism, abstract expressionism, tachism, and gesturalism. Abstract expressionism, promoted by artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, established spontaneity as an essential principle of the creative act, an influence reflected in the free and intuitive manner in which the Bessarabian artist paints. Additionally, tachism, as an European expression of gesturalism, influenced the ways in which colour is applied and textures are explored, both pictorially and in the materiality of her works' support surfaces. Another important aspect of this investigation is the analysis of how gestural spontaneity in Tatiana Cojocaru's work relates to contemporary trends in Besssarabian art. An essential element of her artwork is represented by the allegorical and symbolic charge of entering other dimensions, beyond what is visible, which shapes the fundamental character of her painting. The study explores how pictorial gesturality becomes a means of personal expression and a way of communicating inner emotions, while also integrating into a broader artistic context influenced by modernism and postmodernism. The sources of the artist's abstract visual thinking are found in the themes explored by Moldovan painters such as Mihai Grecu, Andrei Sârbu, Ilie Cojocaru, Tudor Zbârnea, Gheorghe Oprea, and others. These artists explore the chromatic directions specific to abstract art, drawing inspiration from visual elements of traditional interiors and the native landscape. Cojocaru addresses existential philosophical themes, investigates the interconnection between interior and exterior spaces, and explores the symbolism of gates, as well as the visual expression of inner states, thus continuing the thematic directions initiated by her predecessors. The inner and outer reflection of the native landscape has become the main source of the artist's creation. She explores the connections between the outer, natural world and inner perceptions, intertwining them in a constant dialogue that deeply reflects her bond with the places and memories of her origin. In her works, the landscape is not just a visual representation but also a field of introspection, where nature becomes a symbolic environment expressing inner states, personal traumas, and the desire for belonging and rediscovery. The artist brings the native landscape to life not through meticulous technique but also through a vision that transcends simple observation, turning it into a space for reflection, discovery, and reconciliation with the self. Through this investigation, the study seeks to highlight the stylistic and conceptual particularities that define gestural spontaneity in Tatiana Cojocaru's work, emphasizing the impact of modernist sources on her artistic evolution. As a result, this research will contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of contemporary Bessarabian art and how a contemporary artist engages in dialogue with the modernist tradition.
