Amavata is a serious condition recognized in Ayurvedic medicine, marked by joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, closely paralleling what is known as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Western medicine. This disorder occurs due to the buildup of Ama (toxins) and the disruption of Vatadosha, resulting in both systemic and localized joint symptoms. A critical aspect of Amavata is the involvement of RasavahaSrotas, which are the channels that facilitate the circulation of Rasa Dhatu or bodily fluids. The dysfunction of these channels hampers nutrient distribution and metabolic processes, leading to the formation of Ama and causing systemic inflammation. This review seeks to thoroughly analyze the aetiopathogenesis of Amavata, particularly focusing on RasavahaSrotodusthi (the disturbance of RasavahaSrotas) and its relationship to autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. The research incorporates insights from both traditional Ayurvedic texts and contemporary medical literature to clarify the mechanisms behind Amavata. It underscores significant parallels between Ayurvedic theories and current immunological research, especially regarding the role of Ama in inflammation and immune system imbalance. Additionally, the review examines the therapeutic potential of Ayurvedic approaches, such as Shodhana (detoxification), Shamana (symptomatic relief), dietary adjustments, and lifestyle modifications for managing Amavata. Ayurvedic treatments, including Panchakarma and various herbal remedies, have demonstrated effectiveness in alleviating inflammation and enhancing the quality of life for affected individuals. By elucidating the function of RasavahaSrotas in the pathogenesis of Amavata, this study offers valuable insights for disease prevention and emphasizes the importance of Ayurvedic concepts in addressing chronic inflammatory disorders. It advocates for an integrative treatment strategy that merges Ayurvedic practices with modern medical technologies to improve the therapeutic effectiveness for patients with Amavata.
