Diversity of Dragonflies Odonata from District Ghotki Sindh Pakistan
View through CrossRef
Dragonflies, which belong to the order Odonata, play a crucial role in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They serve as bioindicators because of their sensitivity to environmental change. Various ecological factors including habitat availability, climate, and water quality influence the diversity and distribution of dragonfly species. This study offers an opportunity to assess the health of freshwater ecosystems and underscores the importance of preserving wetland habitats that support diverse Odonata species. This study focuses on the variety of dragonflies and other Odonata species found in the Ghotki district of Sindh, Pakistan. Samples were collected from October 2021 to May 2022, yielding 465 specimens. Eight species were identified: Orthetrum chrysis, Orthetrum sabina (Drury, 1770), Orthetrum pruinosum neglectum, Orthetrum cancellatum cancellatum, Trithemis aurora, and Crocothemis erythraea, along with Crocothemis servilia. This study documents the diversity and distribution of dragonflies in the Ghotki district, providing essential baseline data for future research and conservation efforts. Wetlands have been identified as key habitats for dragonflies, highlighting the need for their conservation. Further studies should investigate seasonal variations and the impact of anthropogenic activities on odonate populations.
