This copper engraving is one of the key sequences, with a leaf with four consoles. The sheet is part of Tarquinio Ligustri’s engraved 1596 sheet with thirty consoles, Capricci di Tarquinio Ligustri di Viterbo, edited with papal privilege (Oxford, Ashmolean Museum, The Larger Talman Album, fol. 77). Only a few of Ligustri’s engravings are known in the older literature: an etching with the Viterbo plan from 1596, and a plan of the Garden of the Lante villa in Bagnaia, from 1596 (see Claudia Lazzaro-Bruno, The Villa Lante at Bagnaia: An Allegory of Art and Nature, Art Bulletin, 59, 1977, pp. 553-560, Fig. 3; for the privilege see Christophe L.E.E. Witcombe, Copyright in the Renaissance. Prints and the P It is possible that the Ligustri itself has stabbed the leaf, although until now it is only a hypothesis (see Sutera 2013). This copper engraving was reissued by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, Libro de catafalchi, tabernacoli, con varij disegni di porte, finestre..., Rome 1648 (Lotz 1939, (3849) 3600, under Rossi). This episode was included in his Indice delle stampe from 1677 and mentioned until 1805 in the publishing catalog of the Calcografia delle Reverende Camera Apostolica.
