Leitourgia and Apophasis

Abstract Apophasis is normally approached as an epistemological issue: what can we say about God, and what can we not say? Kataphasis articulates the former, and apophasis the latter. Sometimes a proposed via negativa will start with affirmative statements and think progress is made by denying them. This essay proposes a different approach. Latria is the worship we owe God, this worship involves more than understanding God, it involves loving God. That comes about by God’s grace working a deification of the person. When we approach apophasis from liturgical theology we discover a beneficial union of leitourgia and apophasis. Apophaticism creates a posture for liturgy by drawing forth abnegation from the soul, and liturgy assures us that even if there are things we cannot say, there are mysteries we can taste.
