Persistent Presence: Space and Time in the Films of William Wyler

View through CrossRef
The past looms large in the films of William Wyler. Many of his films are structured around an inescapable past, which is as much historical as it is personal and social. Wuthering Heights, Mrs. Miniver, The Heiress, Ben Hur all use aspects of personal, social and at times meta-filmic history to convey a sense of inescapability. While most films use ‘backstory’ as an important element in their narrative structure, it is the present problems that motivate Wyler’s characters, while the past remains a source of dramatic tension. This chapter asserts that Wyler’s films are resolved on whether or not characters can come to terms with their seemingly overwhelming legacy. Author: Francis Mickus
