PITTA DOSHA – PHYSIOLOGY AND TREATMENT PRINCIPLES
View through CrossRef
Pitta Dosha is one of the three fundamental regulatory principles (Tridosha) described in Ayurveda and is primarily responsible for digestion, metabolism, thermoregulation, vision, intellect, and bodily coloration. Predominantly composed of Agni and Jala Mahabhutas, Pitta embodies the principles of transformation and biochemical activity within the body. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the physiological aspects of Pitta Dosha, including its etymology, definition, Panchabhautika constitution, qualities (Gunas), and five functional subdivisions—Pachaka, Ranjaka, Sadhaka, Alochaka, and Bhrajaka Pitta. The discussion further elaborates on the Ayurvedic principles of Pitta management based on the Samanya–Vishesha Siddhanta, emphasizing the use of cooling, sweet, bitter, and astringent substances to counteract aggravated Pitta. Special attention is given to Virechana Karma, which is regarded as the principal therapeutic intervention for Pitta elimination and the management of Pitta-dominant disorders. The chapter also highlights the importance of dietary regulation, lifestyle modifications, seasonal regimens (Ritucharya), herbal formulations, and supportive therapies such as Raktamokshana and external cooling measures. By integrating preventive, promotive, and curative approaches, Ayurvedic Pitta Chikitsa offers a holistic framework for maintaining physiological balance and managing metabolic and inflammatory disorders effectively.
