Jungle Justice: Its Place in the Nigerian Criminal Justice System

It is an established fact in life that for us to survive in a sane society not girded with the cloaks and fabrics of anarchy, individuals must desist from perpetuating criminal and uncivilized acts such as “jungle justice”. This article basically examines the concept of jungle justice, its origin, position of law, legality and the attitude of the courts towards it in Nigeria.<br><br>It is observed that perpetrators of jungle justice innocently believe that they are strictly dishing out “justice” to an alleged criminal, thereby helping the society to reduce crimes and sanitize the polity. However, other times, the perpetrators are fully aware of its illegality and reverberating (negative) effects on the society but choose to take laws into their hands as they believe it is the quickest way to justice.<br><br>The author recommends among other things massive enlightenment of the public on the effects of jungle justice in a society, swift access and dispensation of justice via the courts for criminal matters as solutions to this menace.
