Sarah: The Life of Sarah Bernhardt

View through CrossRef
This chapter tackles how Robert Gottlieb produced a book on the life story of Sarah Bernhardt. Duc de Morny, the brother of the emperor Napoleon III, entered Bernhardt in Paris Conservatoire and Comédie-Française in an effort to develop her skills as an actress. However, she failed both jobs and lived as a prostitute for the next two years of her life. After giving birth, Bernhardt scored a job with Odéon theatre and thrived. The chapter cites how Bernhardt turned the Odéon into a military hospital where she tended the wounded and dying During the disastrous Franco-Prussian war of 1870. It expounds on how Bernhardt kept flourishing under her own acting company touring across Europe and America.
