The emergence of coinage in Languedoc: early indications of use (6th-3rd century BCE)

Languedoc is a Mediterranean region between Agly and Rhone. In the 6th century BCE, the Greeks install two colonies in the east and the west of Languedoc : Marseille and Emporion. Their installation, with a mint and an economy similar to that of the Greek world, introduces a new conception of trade in southern Gaul. Coinage was used initially as an accounting unit. Between the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, several archaic coins have been discovered in Languedoc’s oppida. From the end of the 4th century BCE, a treasure of Massaliot obols was found in lattes : coinage is therefore considered as a wealth concentrator and a medium of exchange. The Massaliot obol turns out to be the currency used in commerce. The study of archaeological contexts demonstrates an early economic use of coins in Languedoc but also a religious use. Finally, this monetary appropriation is reflected in the issuing of the first local coined money in Languedoc in the 3rd century BCE.
