Marine-Derived Cosmeceuticals: Enhancing Skin Health and Vitality

Introduction: The growing demand for naturally derived active pharmaceutical ingre-dients (APIs) in cosmetics has led to the exploration of marine ecosystems as a rich source of bioactive compounds. Marine-derived ingredients from zooplankton, phytoplankton, algae, sea cucumbers, seaweed, corals, and shrimp have shown potential in treating dermatological disor-ders such as wrinkles, blemishes, aging, hyperpigmentation, and oxidative damage. These ingre-dients are also sustainable and eco-friendly, making them valuable for cosmeceutical formula-tions that combine cosmetic and therapeutic benefits. Objective: This review aims to analyze marine-derived APIs, focusing on their chemical compo-sition, therapeutic applications in cosmeceuticals, and effectiveness in managing dermatological disorders. It also explores physicochemical properties, formulation strategies, and market trends. Method: Research articles on marine-derived active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in cos-meceuticals were collected from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords such as “ma-rine bioactives,” “cosmeceuticals,” “antioxidants,” “anti-aging,” and “skin rejuvenation” were used. Studies on formulation strategies and evaluation methods were also included. Result: Marine-derived APIs demonstrated antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and skin-rejuvenating properties. Their multifunctional nature enhances both therapeutic efficacy and for-mulation stability. Increasing consumer demand for natural and sustainable cosmeceuticals has driven research and market growth. Conclusion: Marine-derived APIs offer promising opportunities for innovative cosmeceuticals, providing natural and effective solutions for dermatological disorders. Their sustainability and multifunctional properties make them ideal for next-generation products. Ongoing research into marine ecosystems is essential to discover new bioactive compounds and expand their therapeutic potential.
