Hybrid Encoding Scheme for Vocoders

This paper describes a method of encoding the conventional channel-vocoder parameters using a combined PCM-delta modulation scheme. The scheme takes advantage of the channel-to-channel correlation of the amplitude information without permitting the vulnerability to bit errors that one usually associates with delta modulation. This approach to efficient coding has provided improved intelligibility scores at relatively low transmission rates. The basic concept is explained and evaluation results are presented.
