Some Features of the Army Channel Vocoder
View through CrossRef
A new channel vocoder has been developed jointly by the Hughes Aircraft Company and the U. S. Army Electronics R & D Laboratory as an integral component of a tactical communications system. The technical features of this vocoder include an improved voicing indicator, a pitch extractor in which the analog representation of the pitch frequency is stored during unvoiced intervals, and a spectrum-flattening technique that is based on schemes that have been used in the design of voice-excited vocoders [E. E. David, Jr., et al., IRE Trans. Inform. Theory 8, (1962)]. Preliminary results of performance tests, conducted by an independent organization, indicate PB word-intelligibility scores in excess of 90% for 2400 bits/sec digital operation and scores near 95% for analog operation. In order to illustrate the relative value of the above-mentioned technical features, test results for other modes of operation are also presented.
