Gladys Deacon, Later Duchess of Marlborough

In 1917, Epstein made a refined and elegant bust of his old friend Gladys Deacon. An American, Deacon was brought up in artistic circles in Venice and Paris and collected works by Degas and Rodin, whom she knew personally. She later married the Duke of Marlborough and commissioned a bust of her aristocratic- and ascetic-looking husband.
