platter / tray

View through Europeana Collections
Plate; oval shape with wide, wavy and curved edge. In the Spiegel Vierpaß with mythological shepherd scene in purple painting (Apollo and the Nymphe Issa) framed by purple, gold-hollowed foliage, band and lattice. On the border, East Asian border (palmette and foliage) was Europeanized between gilded stripes. Maybe by J. P. Danhöffer. (Neuwirth, Waltraud) Storm-Bednarczyk sees the treatment of the easel/figures as similar to the work of Anton Schulz. Probably shaped after a silver model, the platter with a twisted border is painted in a four-pass cartouche with a mythological scene in Purpurcamaieu. The depiction is the transformation of Apollo, who advertises the Nymph Issa, into a shepherd. The template was “Die Als des Ovidii” by Johann Ulrich Krauss (circa 1690). The work was preserved from the estate of the Viennese porcelain factory in the MAK in Vienna. The porcelain painter has changed the template a little: an amor with a mask hovering above the pair is missing on the plate, as well as the border of the nymph, while the landscape was given more space and a few sheep and cows were added to the idyl. An already very baroque border, but still East Asian inspired in its complex, adorns the raised border, in the mirror of the slab, airy foliage and bandage work and lattice work fields adapt harmoniously to the shape of the slab.
