Evaluation of the treatment of closed volar Barton's fracture (AO type 23-B3) using volar T-locking plate

Background: Volar Barton's fracture is not an uncommon fracture. Among different methods of managing these cases, open reduction and internal fixation using a volar T-locking plate is relatively recent and a commonly used method. And, objective of this study was to evaluate the results of treatment of these cases adopting the mentioned method. Methods: This  cross sectional clinical  study  was  carried  out  from   January 2015 to December 2016 at National  Institute of Traumatology  and  Orthopaedic  Rehabilitation (NITOR), Sher- e- Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Patients diagnosed as closed volar Barton's fracture were study population.  A total of 23 patients aged between 26 and 60 years irrespective of sex, who were AO type 23-B1, were included in the study of which 2 patients were dropped out during follow up. Results: The mean age found is 34.4±9.13 years. Open reduction and internal fixation of closed volar Barton's fracture was performed. According to Green and O'Brien score for functional results final outcome “Satisfactory” (excellent & good) was 76.19% and “Unsatisfactory” (fair & poor) was 23.8%. Two patients (9.5%) had postoperative complications. Conclusion: Open reduction and internal fixation of Volar Barton's fracture by volar T­ locking plate can result in good to excellent outcome in most of the cases.
