This chapter describes Wedding Breakfast, a brief dramatic scena by Adam Gorb which can function as a comedic party piece. As a wickedly apt but always respectful and affectionate tribute to Igor Stravinsky, Wedding Breakfast parodies brilliantly the musical and verbal characteristics of Stravinsky’s cantata Les Noces (1923). Here, Gorb has concocted a text of Russian-sounding gibberish which, ingeniously, makes no sense at all. The throaty vowels and guttural consonants of authentic Russian pronunciation can perhaps be exaggerated for added effect. The singer’s role is that of the bride on the morning after the nuptial celebrations featured in the Stravinsky work. The composer imagines her somewhat the worse for wear after her wedding night—even a little inebriated.
