Alceste (1767–1769)

Abstract
When Gluck visited Florence in February 1767, Alceste was already finished. He may well have played portions of it to Archduke Leopold, whose interest from an early stage is implied in the celebrated dedication of the score. A letter from Calzabigi written in March of that year shows that the new opera was complete and its performance expected soon. Calzabigi addresses the imperial chancellor Prince Wenzel Anton Kaunitz, his employer and patron, who, after Durazzo’s resignation on I April 1764, had taken a leading role in protecting both the interests of the French company at the Burgtheater and Gluck’s and Calzabigi’s operatic innovations.1
