Analysis of Autonomous Driving Takeover Performance and Trust Impact Based on Alcohol

With the development and gradual adoption of autonomous vehicles, their safety remains a major challenge. At present, it is known that alcohol can affect the driver's state while driving and has an important impact on driving safety. However, the impact of alcohol on the takeover of the autonomous driving field and whether drunk drivers are more reliant on autonomous driving systems are unclear. Therefore, an exploratory study was carried out based on a fixed-base driving simulator. This study recruited 30 young and middle-aged participants to explore the effect of alcohol on the performance of driving takeover in various non-driving related tasks and scenarios and to evaluate the willingness and trust of drivers to use the automatic driving system. The results of the study showed that the overall stability of the takeover process of drunk drivers was lower than that of normal drivers, and drinking increased the driver's reaction time, lateral acceleration and lateral position standard deviation. In addition, the interaction between alcohol and risk scenarios showed that the impairment of alcohol was more pronounced in complex scenarios. Regarding the driver's trust in the automatic driving system after drinking, compared with normal drivers, drunk drivers have lower trust in the automatic driving system and will not choose to trust it because of the dependence on the automatic driving system. Even in conditionally autonomous vehicles, alcohol can have a significant impact on driving safety when the driver needs to take over.
