Johannes Theodoor Thijsse 1893–1984

On April 30, 1984, Professor Doctor Engineer J.T. Thijsse, professor emeritus of the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, passed away at the age of 91.Johannes T. Thijsse was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1893, the son of a well‐known Dutch biologist. He graduated from the Delft University of Technology in 1917 with a degree in civil engineering. In 1927, he became the first director of the newly formed Delft Hydraulics Laboratory, a function he continued until 1960. In 1936, Thijsse received a lectureship in hydraulics at the Delft University, to be followed in 1938 by his appointment as Professor Extraordinary and in 1946 as ordinary professor.
