Sunlight over a Lake near Snowdon, Llanberis, North Wales
View through Europeana Collections
Varley’s inscription Sun over Snowdon Llanberis (on the verso) of this watercolour indicates his interest in rendering the reflection of light on the lake. The artist toured North Wales three times between 1802 and 1805, his most creative period. On these trips he often went out in bad weather, and sat for hours on end to observe the effects of light, wind and rain.
