View through CrossRef

Abstract:
The current era of technology makes the pedagogy in the teaching and facilitation of the History subject more dynamic. Films are one of the teaching aids that contain visual and audio elements. It can make it easier for Gifted and Talented (GT) Students to understand History that was previously more contained in textbooks. Learning History is not just about memorizing the facts it is more meaningful when GT students are able to think like a Historian. This study was carried out to evaluate the improvement of the Historical Thinking Skills (HTS) of GT students by using two films that correspond to the topics taught in the subject of Southeast Asian History: Post-Independence and Nationalism and Nation-Building. The study was conducted on 78 GT students of National Gifted College, UKM by using the purposive sampling method. Analysis of pre-test and post-tests of GT students were used by using the t-test method to see the increase in HTS of GT students based on percentage, median, mean, and standard deviation while correlation tests were used to assess the correlation between pre-test and post-tests of GT students. The results of the study show that 73% of GT students like to watch History-based films with positive effectiveness from the aspect of improving the HTS based on the pre-test and post-tests conducted. Teachers and GT students should take advantage of the use of History films in the classroom. With the latest technology, it can make it easier for GT students to watch films wherever they are before the class starts. However, the organized and systematic method of pedagogy should be implemented by teachers so that the improvement of HTS of GT students takes place in accordance with the learning objectives of the History subject at school.
