The dark forest of mystical seduction of silvery Selene The article is a study of a passage from Virgil’s Georgics (III 384-394), in which the poet writes about the seduction of Selene by the god Pan. He lured the goddess of the moon from heavens to a dark forest by means of a white sheep fleece. The tale can be an etiological myth explaining the origins of a magical practice, known from many ancient sources, of bringing the moon to the earth. It is also an archetypal account of evil hidden in a forest. It lies in wait for innocent creatures, “pure” like snow, and has, above all, a sexual connotation. It is symbolised by the wild and lustful god Pan, who has the features of a man and a goat.
