Aaron McDuffie Moore was born on September 6, 1863 in a rural region of southeastern North Carolina. He was the ninth of ten children born to Israel Moore and Annie Eliza Spaulding Moore. The chapter lays out a brief history and description of Columbus County, home to the Moores, and family history. Moore’s grandparents were land owners, a feat for African Americans at the time. The chapter finally proposes a brief character description of the young Moore.
