Gildas was a British Latin writer and ecclesiastic of the sixth century (approx. c. 500–570CE). His most famous work, written around 540CE, is theDe excidio Britanniae, a fierce invective addressed to the secular and ecclesiastical rulers of his day. Although initially studied for its historical perspective on post‐Roman Britain and as the only contemporary account of theadventus saxonum, the arrival of the Saxons to Britain, the text is not a true history but is instead a Christian moral exhortation. Gildas is heavily influenced by Old Testament prophets and models the British people as the “new Israel,” being punished for their sins by military defeat and famine. TheDe excidiowas an influence on later writers such as Bede, Wulfstan, and Geoffrey of Monmouth.
