Arkadiy Shofman, Vladimir Zhigunin and the Problems of Periodization in the World and Ancient History

The article analyses an episode in the scientific life of the Department of General History, Kazan State University, i.e. the publication of a manual “Periodization of the World History” (1984), which was immediately criticized for “ideological faults”. The analysis shows that a great part of the book was formed by the annotations of Marxist classics; however, along with this, its authors undertook an interesting attempt to improve some of the Marxist categories, to express their own theoretical views, to integrate into the official methodology new research approaches that manifested themselves both inside and outside the Soviet science.
