Cette étude se propose d’explorer le rapport entre ironie et image de soi. Elle se concentre sur les postures de trois auteurs contemporains qui ont décliné différemment le personnage ancestral de l’ironiste, dont l’origine remonte à l’eirôn — terme utilisé par les Anciens pour désigner un dissimulateur. Tout au long de leurs parcours, Jean-Benoît Puech, Éric Chevillard et Thomas Clerc ont peaufiné un autoportrait implicite, nuançant leur ethos via le recours systématique à l’ironie — ce mode expressif sibyllin « qui joue sur l’écart entre des sens en opposition ». En résultent des postures évanescentes, sardoniques et ingénieuses qui renouent, d’une certaine manière, avec un « scénario auctorial ironique » cristallisé à l’ère romantique. Plus précisément, Jean-Benoît Puech se fabrique, dans ses œuvres, un personnage d’illusionniste ; Thomas Clerc fait revivre la figure du dandy ; et Éric Chevillard se présente, indirectement, comme un enfant capricieux. En se mettant en scène, ces écrivains s’interrogent sur la mise en scène des écrivains à l’époque contemporaine ; de telle sorte que leurs postures ironiques, c’est-à-dire distanciées, gagnent à être pensées comme des postures de second degré, des postures réflexives ou des métapostures.
