FROM EDUCATION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS TO THE ‘GENDER IDEOLOGY’ MOVEMENT: A FOUCALDIAN DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF THE GENESIS IDEOLOGY'S TOOL
View through CrossRef
This paper investigates human rights education in Brazilian schools and the escalation of the ‘gender ideology’ discourse, its strategies and effects. It discusses the context in which this discourse became possible, mainly the ineffectiveness of the proposed political and legal actions intended to ensure human rights are part of the school curricula, which has led to the rise of the ‘gender ideology’ movement. Foucauldian discourse analysis is used to study the ‘gender ideology’ movement’s premisses and to put together a ‘gender ideology’ discourse as part of a bigger agenda, identified here as Genesis ideology discourse. This analysis reveals the ‘gender ideology’ discourse sustains the Genesis ideology by creating moral panic towards the teaching of human rights and by superficially claiming objectivity and plurality of views as teaching principles, a demand their own discourse seems to strongly contradict.
