Representation of a portion of Charles Babbage 's differentiating machine. Babbage conceived his first machine of differences in 1823 and began its assembly in 1833; but the project remained unfinished. This illustration shows the only part built of the machine and was used as a frontispiece for the autobiography of Babbage “Passages from the Life of a Philosopher” published in 1864.
