Crystallin Composition of the Bovine Lens Epithelium Related to Aging

The bovine lens epithelial cells contain two α-crystallins, one pre-α-crystallin, three β-crystallins and one γ-crystallin, as detected by immunoelectrophoresis with polyvalent and specific antisera. With aging, one of the two molecular forms of epithelial α-crystallin disappears. The β-crystallins of the epithelium may also change with aging, and the epithelial γ-crystallin differs structurally from the γ-crystallins in the equator and nucleus. Except one pre-α-crystallin, one α-crystallin and one γ-crystallin, all other crystalline which are present in the epithelium are also found in the other lens parts.
