Salinity and Sodicity Assessment of Tube-Well Groundwaters Across Three Tehsils of District Nankana Sahib

The increasing salinity of groundwater used for irrigation has become a serious concern across Punjab. The present study was conducted to evaluate the impact of salinity and sodicity of tube-well irrigation water on soil quality. Groundwater samples were collected from tube wells located in the tehsils of District Nankana Sahib—namely Nankana Sahib, Shahkot, and Sangla Hill—in Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 300 groundwater samples were randomly collected from these areas for analysis. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of groundwater quality used in tube-well irrigation systems within the district. Salinity was evaluated through electrical conductivity (EC), while sodicity was determined using sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and residual sodium carbonate (RSC). The results revealed that, out of 300 samples, only 36 were suitable for irrigation, 36 were marginally suitable, and the remaining 228 were found to be unsuitable. These findings highlight the need for tehsil-level monitoring and the development of policies to ensure the sustainable use of tube-well water for crop production.
