Three studies for a sculpture

View through Europeana Collections
In the artwork titled "Three Studies for a Sculpture," one can discern Alex Mylona's preparatory efforts for her work "The Kiss – Tribute to Brancusi," which was executed in marble in 1967. The artist pays homage to one of the most significant sculptors of modernism, Constantin Brancusi, and one of his most iconic and recognizable compositions, "The Kiss," which he crafted in various variations, each time leading to increasingly abstracted forms. The sculptor feels a kinship with the simplicity, purity, and geometry of the Romanian artist. Furthermore, the theme of this particular sculpture aligns with her own thematic interests. In her rendition, she created a strict, symmetrical composition, harnessing the virtues and quality, the shine and texture of marble, successfully crystallizing in a unique way the sense of contact and union between the two forms.
