Chaturviṃśati Upakrama: Classical Detoxification Protocols

View through CrossRef
The Chaturviṃśati Upakrama, or twenty-four clinical modalities of detoxification, forms the absolute cornerstone of emergency management in Agadatantra (Ayurvedic toxicology). This chapter presents a rigorous exploration of these classical therapeutic interventions, which range from immediate localized treatments to comprehensive systemic purification protocols designed to combat diverse toxicological presentations. By analyzing individual modalities—including mantra, arishta-bandhana, utkartana, nishpydana, and targeted internal shodhana or samana therapies—the study breaks down their pathogenetic rationale according to traditional tenets of doṣa, dhātu, srotas, and ojas protection. Concurrently, these classical procedures are paired with modern clinical pharmacology, emergency medical response frameworks, and surgical concepts (Shalyatantra) to map traditional anti-toxic mechanisms against contemporary understandings of systemic neutralisation, tissue preservation, and hemodynamic stabilization. Ultimately, this comprehensive cross-disciplinary integration validates the clinical utility of the twenty-four protocols, establishing an evidence-based roadmap for utilizing classical detoxification methods within modern toxicological crises, cross-disciplinary medical emergencies, and global healthcare settings.
