LASER AND COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY IN CLINICAL PRACTICE FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS

A rapidly developing discipline, laser and cosmetic dermatology combines minimally invasive technology, aesthetic medicine, and laser science to treat a variety of dermatological and cosmetic disorders. Precision, safety, and patient outcomes have all been greatly enhanced by developments in laser systems, energy-based devices, and combination therapy. Cosmetic dermatology improves attractiveness, self-esteem, and quality of life in addition to treating medical skin conditions. By helping dermatologists with patient assessment, treatment preparation, intra-procedural support, post-procedure care, documentation, and patient education, physician assistants (PAs) play an increasingly important role in cosmetic dermatology. For safe and efficient practice, a solid grasp of laser physics, selective photothermolysis, tissue–laser interaction, and diverse laser and non-laser modalities is necessary. While following established procedures for patient selection, safety, and infection control, PAs actively manage common indications such laser hair reduction, pigmentary and vascular lesions, acne scars, skin rejuvenation, and tattoo removal. The principles of laser science, types of lasers and energy-based devices, clinical indications, procedural protocols, complication management, ethical and medicolegal considerations, and emerging trends like fractional and picosecond lasers, combination therapies, and AI-assisted aesthetics are all highlighted in this chapter. Patient safety, moral behavior, informed consent, and ongoing professional growth are all prioritized. Physician assistants are projected to play an increasingly important role in providing safe, efficient, and patient-centered aesthetic care under suitable supervision as cosmetic dermatology develops.
