12 Vladimir Putin's Political Choice: Towards Bureaucratic Authoritarianism Lilia Shevtsova

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter examines Putin’s efforts to strengthen the state, which subjects society and individuals to its will. It argues that by cancelling out the democratic achievements of the Gorbachev and Yeltsin years, Putin’s new rules have taken Russia back to the point from which it tried to move forward in the 1980s. In short, Putin’s leadership has traditionalist elements that negate the transformational paradigm.
