Myroslav Skoryk Partita № 5 for Piano: Genre Aspects of Performance Interpretation

View through CrossRef
The article studies Partita № 5 for piano by modern Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk, which is an original cyclical composition in neo-baroque style. The main perspective of the research is the performance one, which is in great demand in modern piano pedagogy and practice. In her study, the author also applies the "genre approach", actively developed in recent years in musicological literature. The novelty of the work is brought by the lack of particular research of Partita No. 5 by M. Skoryk. The article systematizes scientifi c views on the musical genre, reviewed in terms of performance interpretation. In the analysis, the author brings in concepts such as “genre name”, genre attribute, polygenre, genre approach. The author establishes the genre specifi city of the Partita, and reveals three levels of the realization of different genres in its musical text: the macro level – through the revival of the baroque genre of the partita, the meso level – through the figurative and semantic pattern of the genres, stated in the names of the parts (Prelude, Waltz, Choir, Aria, and Finale), the micro level – by means of the polygenre that is common to the thematic model of each part. The understanding of these three levels enables the performer to offer a more exact interpretation of M.Skoryk’s composition, comprehend its content, and create original performing versions, building on the genre context.
