In a career spanning five decades, Alice Meynell wrote poetry, journalism, essays, literary and art criticism; she also edited periodicals and literary collections. She enjoyed both popularity and critical acclaim for essays such as “The Rhythm of Life” and for poems such as “The Shepherdess,” achieving considerable renown and influence in fin‐de‐siècle Britain. A Roman Catholic and a staunch feminist, she espoused moral and aesthetic discipline.
