Bioorthogonal chemistry offers powerful ways to carry out abiotic reactions within living systems, giving researchers the tools to observe and influence biology with exceptional selectivity. The field continues to evolve rapidly, with new ideas and approaches shaping its role in chemical biology and beyond. In this Thieme WebCheminar, Annemieke Madder, Kim Bonger and Asier Unciti‑Broceta—contributors to the Science of Synthesis volume Abiotic Reactions in Live Environments (edited by José Mascareñas and Maria Tomás-Gamasa)—will share their perspectives on current directions in bioorthogonal chemistry and how the area is developing across different research contexts.
