painting (gouache): ["Empress Seated, and Lady"]

View through Europeana Collections
A woman is seated in an elaborately carved throne at left. Her blue and green robe is extensively decorated with dragons and phoenix, waves and peacock feathers. To the right is another woman wearing similar robes but large sleeves which conceal her hands. Her feet have also been bound and her head-dress has long beading at the sides. Behind them is an enormous panel of carved jade, depicting phoenix and a sun. The carpet is also heavily decorated with geometric and floral patterns and lacks perspective. Background is untouched. On pith paper which is trimmed with blue silk ribbon. Export watercolour for Western market.
