Sermons of the Avignon Popes. The liturgical calendar of the apostolic Curia set the days on which the Pope was able to speak. Collections of sermons by John XXIII, Benoît XII and Clement VI have been preserved. Not only are there texts relating to various feast days, there are also ones whose echo was important : John XXII’ s stand on beatific visions, Clement VI’s speech on the imperial election of Charles of Moravia. The oratorical action of the Avignon popes in theological, spiritual and political fields has too often been neglected compared to the importance attached to their administrative work and to their temporal concerns.
