The Catastrophe: Al-Nakba in Palestinian Fiction

This chapter investigates expressions of the Nakba in Palestinian narrative. In particular, it focuses on the works of Samira Azzam and Ghassan Kanafani, who are considered to be the founders of the new short story in contemporary Arabic literature. Both authors experienced the trauma of ethnic cleansing in Palestine, and their work is steeped in reflections on the Nakba. With nods to other authors all the way through, the chapter shows how the Nakba is perceived in Palestinian literature as a structure and not as an isolated event.
