Role of Somali Language Transmission in Preserving Cultural Identity Among Somali Community in Kisenyi, Kampala

This study examined the Role of Somali Language Transmission in preserving cultural identity among the Somali community in Kisenyi, Kampala, Uganda. A correlational research design was employed to investigate the relationship between Somali language transmission and the preservation of cultural identity within the community. The study focused on two key variables: the frequency and depth of Somali language transmission and the level of cultural identity preservation. The target population comprised 120 respondents, including Somali community leaders, language instructors, community members actively engaged in cultural practices, and other purposively selected Somali residents. Using Slovene's formula, a sample size of 92 respondents was determined. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis. The findings revealed a very strong positive relationship between language transmission and the preservation of cultural identity (r = .885), which was statistically significant at the 0.01 level (p < .001). This indicates that increased transmission of the Somali language is strongly associated with higher levels of cultural identity preservation within the community. The study concluded that language transmission plays a critical role in sustaining the cultural identity of the Somali community in Kisenyi. Beyond communication, the Somali language functions as a key medium for transmitting cultural values, traditions, and historical knowledge across generations. The study recommends strengthening Somali language transmission as a central strategy for cultural preservation by encouraging consistent use of the language within households, community gatherings, religious institutions, and educational settings.
