View through CrossRef
ENGLISH ABSTRACT Although chemical weed control provides rapid and effective weed control, it has several limitations, including environmental and health risks, leading to the prohibition of many herbicides. The objective of this study was to find an alternative to use of herbicides in cotton cultivation in Côte d'Ivoire by using service plants to limit weed growth. Three annual service plants (Glycine max (L.) Merr., Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc. and Arachis hypogaea L.) were tested in combination with a cotton crop sown in double rows in a Fisher block experimental design with six replicates. The results obtained showed that cover crops effectively controlled weeds in the absence of chemical weed control. They reduced the dry biomass of weeds by 56% to 94% compared to the control with double rows of cotton without cover crops. In addition, they produced cotton seed yields (1 470 kg. ha-1 to 1 605 kg. ha-1) that were statistically comparable to those of the standard sowing method (1 792 kg.ha-1). The integration of cover crops, particularly Glycine max, generated additional income. This method appears to be a promising alternative, reducing herbicide use and maximising land use.
